I was bidding on a "demon dialer" on ebay and the bidding got too frenetic. I understand their basic function. Anyone care to share any of the multitude of applications one could do with one of these attached to your phone? They look like they could be quite a bit of fun.

Re: Demon dialers
Wed, November 2, 2005 - 5:58 AMMaybe its just my area code, but it seemed like 90% of what I found were Fax Machines. I only tried the first 50 or so numbers on a list, and retired Toneloc to a floppy disc in the back of my collection. Fun if your enterprising enough I guess, but Id imagine that now with Cable and DSL, the ratio of fax machines to actually intresting devices has increased exponentially.
Swaz, if your trying to do anything other than gather a list of numbers with modems at the end, you might not find Toneloc very intresting. That being said, if you were to combine a war dialer, and some Caller ID spoofing (ala your other post), then now we're talking.
I just had a flash of an idea, something like old radio serials, except that you call alot of people and have a recording played for them, and its from a spoofed caller ID. You could turn into an ARG (Alternate Reality Game) of just use it in your own personal Info-War. Itd be intresting to see how long the average person listened in to a recording. Id probably use it to put a little humor in peoples lives if anything, work my message in subtly. If you could have several thousand people getting calls that they actually were looking forward to hearing because they were humorous or entertaining, you could probably subvert an entire area code to do your bidding (evil or otherwise). When I was younger (ok, it was last weekend, after a drunken afternoon) we use to "prank" people, solely with the aim of seeing how long we could keep them on the phone, as oppossed to berating or irritating them.
But then, Ive already said too much. ;-)
Gotta love long distance, impersonal, nearly anonymous forms of communication.

Re: Demon dialers
Wed, October 26, 2005 - 9:54 AMIf I recall correctly, there was a 2600 article a couple of years ago that described how to create an autodialer using an old Palm Pilot w/ modem[1], such that you set it up somewhere outside your home and then collect it later after it had run for a while. All my 2600s are in storage right now, or I would get more info for you.
But, yeah, you can get Toneloc and others straight from the Internet (I am sure I have some on old floppies, if you want me to look); no need to pay for it. Better use it before everything goes IP...
[1: Which I have in a junk box somewhere--maybe should put to it to use.] -

Social Defense Mechanisms: Tools for Reclaiming our Personal Space
Abstract: In contemporary Western society, electronic devices are becoming so prevalent that many people find themselves surrounded by technologies they find frustrating or annoying. The electronics industry has little incentive to address this complaint; I designed two counter-technologies to help people defend their personal space from unwanted electronic intrusion. Both devices were designed and prototyped with reference to the culture-jamming "Design Noir" philosophy. The first is a pair of glasses that darken whenever a television is in view. The second is low-power RF jammer capable of preventing cell phones or similarly intrusive wireless devices from operating within a user's personal space. By building functional prototypes that reflect equal consideration of technical and social issues, I identify three attributes of Noir products: Personal empowerment, participation in a critical discourse, and subversion.

Mon, November 7, 2005 - 5:15 AMFirst Tone Loc & now this. I was a beta tester for Tone Loc, I'm on the t-shirt even. I can't get the second link to work, but I'm familiar with the text :) so that's OK.
